What is Laser Vision Correction?

Laser Vision Correction is a procedure that uses cool excimer laser light to reshape the cornea (front of the eye) to improve vision. Over the last 20 years, laser vision correction has helped millions of patients to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. During the procedure, the cool laser is applied beneath a thin flap (LASIK) or on the surface of the cornea (PRK, LASEK, Epi-LASIK).

Custom Laser Correction

We utilize the most advanced technology to give you the best possible results. State-of-the-art VISX CustomVue Laser Vision Correction employs wavefront technology to map out the specific nuances (“fingerprints”) of each patient’s eyes. The wavefront analysis is used to produce a customized laser treatment for each individual . This higher degree of precision has allowed people in many cases to obtain vision beyond what was possible with glasses, contact lenses, or conventional laser treatments.

Surface Ablation

(No flap, no cut Laser Vision Correcton)

As a corneal specialist, Dr. Meskin is a proponent of no flap, no cut laser vision correction due to exceptional results and high safety profile. With these methods of surgery (PRK, Epi-Lasik) the cool laser is used to reshape the surface of the cornea without the need for creation of a corneal stromal “flap” as is done is LASIK. Many of the complications in LASIK including long term risk of traumatic flap dislocation, or corneal weakening/irregularities (ectasia) are related to the creation of a “flap” which requires a cut into the cornea. In fact, most surgeons in the U.S. utilize surface ablation for patients with thin, “irregular” corneas, or significant dry eye because it is felt to be safer than LASIK. Surface ablation does, however, usually require a longer healing time than LASIK. Dr. Meskin will discuss in detail these procedures with you during your individual consultation.

LASIK

LASIK is a reliable way to improve vision and reduce or eliminate the need to wear glasses or contact lenses. LASIK, like surface ablation, changes the way light is bent, or refracted, as it passes through the cornea so that it focuses properly on the retina and objects can be seen clearly.
During the procedure, a device called a microkeratome or laser (Intralase) cuts a thin flap in the cornea. Patients are given anesthesia so they can't feel the instruments. The flap is then lifted and an excimer laser beam reshapes the cornea's curvature to improve vision. The flap is then replaced and allowed to heal.
