Samuel P. Sprotzer, M.D.Ophthalmologist  Milford | Dr. Samuel P. Sprotzer

Dr. Sprotzer is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist and founder of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, P.C., one of the largest multispecialty ophthalmology practices in the New Haven area. He has been in practice for more than 25 years, with subspecialty training and expertise in cataract and anterior segment surgery, refractive surgery, and laser vision correction.  Dr. Sprotzer grew up in New York City, attending the Bronx High School of Science. He graduated from Columbia University and then received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine.

After completing his internship at Bellevue Hospital in 1974, his training continued at Yale New Haven Hospital where he finished his residency in ophthalmology in 1977.  Dr. Sprotzer served as Chief Resident in ophthalmology at Yale New Haven Hospital and received an International Eye Foundation Fellowship grant, which allowed him to study tropical medicine and ophthalmology in Haiti.

Dr. Sprotzer has been in the forefront of adapting the new surgical techniques of phacoemulsification, small incision and stitchless cataract surgery that has resulted in more rapid patient recovery and less dependence on glasses postoperatively. He has been actively involved in teaching these new state-of-the-art techniques to other physicians. Dr. Sprotzer is Chairman of Ophthalmology at Milford Hospital. He is an attending physician at Yale-New Haven Hospital, He is a Fellow of The American Academy of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians, and the New England Society of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Sprotzer is married to Judy, a clinical psychologist, and has three children.

Martin R. Shapiro, M.D.

Ophthalmologist  Milford | Dr  Martin R. ShapiroDr. Shapiro joined with Samuel P. Sprotzer, M.D. in 1983 to form the group medical practice that has evolved into today's comprehensive eyecare practice of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, P.C. Dr. Shapiro's areas of interest include small incision cataract surgery and the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma. Dr. Shapiro also continues to enjoy offering a broad range of routine and emergency eye care for adults and adolescents in his office practice.

Dr. Shapiro is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Hamilton College in New York and earned his M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Shapiro was selected to receive his residency training in eye surgery at the Ophthalmology Department of Washington University - Barnes Hospital Medical Center, one of the country's most prestigious teaching hospitals. Dr. Shapiro also furthered his medical training during his internship at Harvard's Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Since completing his formal residency training in ophthalmology in 1983, he has participated in numerous post-graduate courses on advanced techniques in eye surgery.

Dr. Shapiro has been Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology since 1985. He is also a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Dr. Shapiro has served on the Board of Directors of Prevent Blindness Connecticut and was Chairman of its Scientific Advisory Committee.

Dr. Shapiro's hospital privileges include active attending status at Yale New Haven Hospital and Milford Hospital.

Philip J. Silverstone, M.D.Ophthalmologist  Milford | Dr  Philip J. Silverstone

Dr. Silverstone joined Eye Physicians and Surgeons, P.C. in 1986 after completing a fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic, Reconstructive and Orbital Surgery at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Silverstone graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1976 and from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in 1980. After two years of Internal Medicine Residency he completed a residency in Ophthalmology at the University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Silverstone is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Yale-New Haven Medical Center. He has co-authored a number of articles and book chapters on topics in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and has been a course instructor at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Silverstone is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a member of the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians and the New England Ocuplastic Society.

Darron A. Bacal, M.D.Ophthalmologist  Milford | Dr  Darron A. Bacal

Dr. Bacal joined Eye Physicians and Surgeons, P.C. in July of 1997 as the group's Pediatric Ophthalmologist. In 1999 he was appointed a Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology in the Yale-New Haven School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. In 2006 he was
promoted to Assistant Clinical Professor in the same department.  He is a Board Certified member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology since 1997 and a Fellow of the Academy since 1998. He is also a member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus. In 1997, Dr. Bacal completed a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology & Adult Strabismus at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Scheie Eye Institute of the University of Pennsylvania. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is one of the top children's hospitals in the U.S.A.

After earning a Bachelor of Science from the Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Bacal received his medical degree in 1992 from Jefferson Medical College of the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Following a medical internship in New York, Dr. Bacal completed his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. He was selected Chief Resident of Ophthalmology, and served in this capacity from 1994-1995. During his Chief Residency, Dr. Bacal traveled to Guyana (South America) to participate in a volunteer project designed to provide Ophthalmic surgical care for the indigent population of the country.

Dr. Bacal is on the active medical staff of Yale-New Haven Hospital, the Hospital of St. Raphael, Milford Hospital, and the Veterans Administration Hospital of West Haven. Dr. Bacal has numerous publications in both textbooks and journals. He has presented original research at national Ophthalmic meetings. In 1995, he was selected the Bill Gore Outstanding Researcher by the Society of Vascular Technology for his study of blood flow within the optic nerve. He presented his findings at the society's annual meeting in Chicago. Dr. Bacal is a manuscript reviewer for Ophthalmology, the official journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of PEDIG (Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group).

Dr. Bacal a member of the Professional Education Committee for Prevent Blindness Connecticut. He resides in Orange, Connecticut with his wife and their two children and enjoys spending time with his family, reading, and racquetball. Dr. Bacal is a PEDIG investigator. PEDIG, the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group, is a national research organization involved in Pediatric Ophthalmology clinical trials and has approximately 50 medical investigators. Dr. Bacal is participating in all of the current studies. Presently all current studies involve amblyopia treatments.

David Levinson, D.O.

Ophthalmologist  Milford | Dr. David LevinsonDr. David Levinson is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist; fellowship trained and specializing in medical and surgical diseases of the retina. Prior to joining Eye Physicians and Surgeons, he was a full time Attending Physician and Assistant Professor of the nationally recognized Department of Ophthalmology at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. His areas of expertise include pharmacologic and surgical management of age related macular degeneration, macular holes and puckers, retinal vein occlusions, central serous chorioretinopathy, retinal detachment, and diabetic retinopathy. He utilizes all forms of state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment including small incision, sutureless vitrectomy resulting in a more rapid, comfortable recovery.

Dr. Levinson completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin. He attended medical school at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and graduated with honors in the top 5% of his class. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at Nassau University Medical Center/Stony Brook University Hospital where he served as chief resident. He subsequently completed two retina fellowships; one in medical retina at NYU Medical Center and one in vitreo-retina surgery at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Levinson is an active member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and diplomat of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Omar Faridi, MD

Dr. Faridi is a Board Certified comprehensive ophthalmologist with fellowship training in glaucoma. Dr. Faridi’s areas of expertise include medical management of glaucoma, innovative surgical and laser treatments of advanced glaucoma, and small-incision cataract surgery. Dr. Faridi also enjoys performing routine and emergency eye examinations for adults and adolescents, including annual examinations and diabetic eye care.

Dr. Faridi joined Eye Physician and Surgeons, P.C. in 2012 after completing a fellowship program in Glaucoma at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Dr. Faridi went on to earn his M.D. from the Boston University School of Medicine.  Dr. Faridi was selected for the residency program in Ophthalmology at the William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI, where he served as Chief Resident of Ophthalmology. 

Dr. Faridi is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Science at the Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Faridi is also on medical staff at the Milford Hospital and CT Eye Surgical Center in Milford. He has co-authored numerous scholarly journal articles and has presented original research in glaucoma at annual meetings. Dr. Faridi is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Glaucoma Society, American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, and the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians.
