Dr. Shapiro joined with Samuel P. Sprotzer, M.D. in 1983 to form the group medical practice that has evolved into today's comprehensive eyecare practice of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, P.C. Dr. Shapiro's areas of interest include small incision cataract surgery and the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma. Dr. Shapiro also continues to enjoy offering a broad range of routine and emergency eye care for adults and adolescents in his office practice.
Dr. Shapiro is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Hamilton College in New York and earned his M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Shapiro was selected to receive his residency training in eye surgery at the Ophthalmology Department of Washington University - Barnes Hospital Medical Center, one of the country's most prestigious teaching hospitals. Dr. Shapiro also furthered his medical training during his internship at Harvard's Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Since completing his formal residency training in ophthalmology in 1983, he has participated in numerous post-graduate courses on advanced techniques in eye surgery.
Dr. Shapiro has been Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology since 1985. He is also a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
Dr. Shapiro has served on the Board of Directors of Prevent Blindness Connecticut and was Chairman of its Scientific Advisory Committee.
Dr. Shapiro's hospital privileges include active attending status at Yale New Haven Hospital and Milford Hospital.
